The Catacombs of Kom El-Shoqafa in Alexandria, Egypt, are among the most important burial sites from the Greco-Roman era and date back to the second century AD. They were discovered by accident in 1900 when a donkey fell to the ground. The catacombs consisted of three levels carved into a rock. Entry is through a spiral staircase. The Hall of Caracalla, which is thought to contain the remains of soldiers and horses, adds to the site's mystery. Intricate carvings, like Anubis dressed as a Roman soldier, reflect Alexandria's multicultural heritage. Originally a private tomb, the catacombs later expanded to accommodate more burials, serving as a final resting place for many.
